Ladakh the magnificent mountain dessert kingdom provides a fitting backdrop for this trip that attempts to do it all. Ladakh is famed for its high passes, brackish water lakes, a stunning lunar landscape, a Buddhist culture warped in time, deep blue endless skies, and a landscape that is larger than life. It is an adventure seekers paradise. Many have said Ladakh is the most beautiful place in the world. But we seek a beauty even more surreal and attempt one of the most celebrated, difficult and exquisite trek of the region. We will walk on a frozen river bed live in caves along the way and fight the twin difficulties of cold and altitude to conquer all!
We catch the early morning flight to Leh. As we look below we see the plains give way to mountains. The mountains, first green with covered snow then turn to arid and then as we cross the Great Himalayan Range we can see the stretch of the high altitude dessert which partly covered by snow below us. Reach Leh and go to the hotel or guesthouse of choice. The rest of the day is spent in acclimatization walks and an orientation walk in the markets of Leh. Overnight stay at Leh at your own expense
After breakfast drive to Chilling, one of the most famous villages in Ladakh and known as a center of crafts, especially metalwork. From here we proceed to Tilt Sumdo. In the afternoon meet your trekking crew and prepare for the trek. After lunch start trek to Bakula Caves (3180m) which is 2.5 hrs, along the frozen river. Today we begin our trek in earnest, with a walk following the course of the river south. Over the next few days we will traverse a landscape of frozen waterfalls where the harsh winters have preserved the traditions and cultures of the local people in a frozen Shangri-La. The Zanskar Valley is the most isolated of the Trans-Himalaya valleys and that true sense of remoteness will become all the more evident as we approach our camp. Overnight camping.
After breakfast trek 6/7 hrs to Dip Yoma (3220m). Trek along the edges of the frozen river, through narrow mountain George. Steep mountain sights fascinates one’s mind as we carefully trek along the river. Overnight camping.
We head back to the river and walk along a canyon. A trek of 5-6 hrs through tremendous canyons which is inaccessible in any other season takes us to Nerak (3300m). Keep an eye out for mountain fox that may be spotted in the hills. Overnight camping.
Nerak Pullu Rest day
We walk further to Dip Yokma. Camp overnight.
Dip Yokma to Bakula Cave or Shingra Yokma (6–7 hrs) Camp overnight.
Bakula cave or Shingra Yokma to Tilat Sumdo 3 hours walk and drive to Leh. At Tilat Sumdo we get into our waiting vehicles to Leh for a much deserved bath and some good rest in warm cozy rooms. Overnight stay at hotel at your own cost
We drive to Leh airport and as we take off we look down on the blue brown mountains and watch them give way to green plains and with a promise to return bid adieu.
